JPMorgan Chase award underwrites Math, Science and Language Camp
JPMorgan Chase has awarded $30,000 to fund the third year of a TCU-Fort Worth ISD summer school program for fourth- and fifth-graders who have recently immigrated to the United States.
Dr. Molly Weinburgh, director of the Andrews Institute, Dr. Cecilia Silva of TCU’s Center for Urban Education, and former faculty member Dr. Katherine Smith will again work with FWISD language centers to help as many as 25 students become more proficient in mathematics, science and language.
The camp tests innovative approaches in teaching the growing ranks of students for whom English is a new language, says Dr. Weinburgh. “It’s imperative that we find ways to teach English language learners strategically to make the concepts understandable as well as help them learn the academic language.”
Dr. Weinburgh recalled one fourth-grader who attended last year’s camp had been labeled “not very bright” by teachers at her school. However, camp faculty noted her aptitude for grasping mathematical concepts beyond her grade level. “Having this experience helped her realize that she is very gifted in math.”
“It is also important for teachers to understand the role that language plays in understanding science concepts,” Dr. Silva adds. “Teachers who understand the differences between academic and conversational uses of English can best support students in developing the necessary tools for academic success.”
